“Currents” is the ideal first volume of Mixtape Series - it embodies what we are. Mixtape aims to keep classical music current by repackaging it and allowing it to cross over more freely into other musical genres. Instead of tightly clutching onto the anchor of the classical performance tradition, Mixtape concerts draw inspiration from today’s model of music consumption — algorithm-produced playlists on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music — and enhances it by handcrafting musical curations that draw connections between pieces no algorithm today could hope to find.
The music you will hear comes from diverse backgrounds yet possesses the same underlying heart and aesthetic. In this sense, today’s Mixtape is less a taste of several different pieces than it is one complete work that uses musical samples as its raw materials. Mixtape originally was conceived because Juan-Salvador and Michael had the idea, and enough encouragement, to find opportunity, and found inspiration for this program from Daoism, an Eastern Philosophy that states it is best to become one with the unplanned rhythms of a universal current.
We have heard nothing but enthusiasm for this project and are riding the Mixtape current ever since. We urge you to join us for Mixtape Series, Vol. 1 “Currents” on November 9th and 10th @ 8 pm at The Art of Living Foundation, 948 W Adams Blvd. We believe this is an important step in showing art music in the relevant direction, and we appreciate all the support we can get. Thank you, and see you soon!
